Though the jokes that "since gay pride month is over, july is now gay wrath month" are funny and all, it's important to remember that July is ACTUALLY Disability Pride Month and ya'll should really be focused on boosting disabled voices and issues this month! For instance, the fact that marriage equality doesn't actually truly exist in the United States for disabled people, or the fact that disabled people are forced to live in poverty or lose their disability benefits, or the fact that 1 in 5 people with chronic pain end up sufferring from alcoholism or other addictions, or how accessibility is still a daily battle for all of us, or how there are active hate groups on places like reddit who try to "call out" those they see as "faking" their disabilities.
This July, boost disabled voices. Talk about the issues that our community faces. Call out ableism.
i think the funniest and realist thing i’ve realized lately is how troubling idealization can be. every person is just… a person. the very people you want to impress or be apart of are just people. even if they seem wildly intimidating because of the way they look or because of their reputation, every one is just a person. human. as embarrassing, as remorseful and they are going through stages of growth just like you are. we only see what we want to see and then drown ourselves further in our own depression and we don’t have to.
truly and i am learning the less i idealise others, the more willing i am to meet people where they are warts n all. and the more willing i am to show myself too and bring my whole self into things. my own embarrassment becomes a new normal and fine thing. stumbling becomes more endearing.
had a teacher once who told us “idealizing people is just as dehumanizing as demonizing them” and that stuck with me so much
That last line. Right there.
The only people who like to be worshipped are the precise people who shouldn’t. The only people who want to be intimidating or powerful are the precise people who shouldn’t. Everyone else knows how distancing and unfair expectations can be.
First, Athletes not allowed to wear BLM protest clothing specifically
Next, banning black swimmers from bigger wearing swim cap that are designed for Afro texture hair
Next, not allowing swimmer to use a Black owned brand of swim caps
Next, forcing Caster Semenya, an African Woman with a natural higher testosterone level to either compete with men or get put on hormones to compete with women
Next, this BS with Sha' Carri and their over punishment of Black athletes
Next, Playing all these mental games with Simone Biles to try and fuck up her confidence
Next, underhanded comments over Serena choosing to not compete this year
Next, all the mfs tryna strong arm and criticize Gwen Berry for not acknowledging the flag on peaceful protest
Bro, Fuck Yall, Fuck Tokyo and Fuck Olympics at this point.
More to add to this, the Olympic committee has now banned certain moves in gymnastics because Simone Biles was the only one to pull them off.
I think this is as “dumbed down” as one can get when it come to explanations on how vaccines work. If you haven’t yet (for whatever reason) and if you can, please get yourself vaccinated and encourage the ones you love to do the same. Seriously.
